Alberta Day Care Camrose - Camrose Children's Centre

The Camrose Children's Centre's Accredited Day Care Centre is designed with age-appropriate rooms that provide specialized care for newborns to school-age children.  The centre includes a large indoor gym and outdoor play area for structured and free play in any weather.  The children are provided with a hot meal and nutritous snacks each day from the kitchen staff.

The Day Care Staff create weekly activity plans that include story telling, music, seasonal arts and crafts.  Also activities such as make-believe play are purposely include to ensure each child has an opportunity to interact with others there-by nurturing healthy social development.

PHILOSOPHY

The Camrose Children’s Centre follows a “learning through play” approach to childcare.  Curiosity and an eagerness to learn come naturally to young children, and when at play, they exhibit intense concentration and motivation.

Children develop through similar stages at individual rates.  Our programs are designed to provide learning experiences that meet individual as well as group needs of children from birth to school age.

We believe a secure environment encourages children to explore and experiment with their surroundings without fear of failure.  This helps develop feelings of being capable and competent.

Staff plan and implement a programs designed to meet the developmental needs of all children in their care.  A combination of self-initiated and structured activities allows children to experience a range of appropriate experiences and interactions that helps them to add to their knowledge, learn new skills and practice familiar ones.  Staff guide and encourage children while allowing them a variety of choices.  They help the children to extend play experiences.

The day care program helps identify children with special needs and gives support to their families by providing additional help to ensure they develop to their full potential.

Our Vision

We will be the primary choice for childcare and early childhood education.

Our Mission

To provide quality childcare and children’s education in an environment that nurtures the
individual development of each child.

Our Values

  • We value integrity and trustworthiness. The highest ethical standards are adhered to in the pursuit of childcare and child development.
  • We value the child as the heart and strength of our organization. The child’s care and education is critical to our organization’s success now and in the future.
  • We value long-term relationships with children and their families, our employees and our community.
  • We value the growth and success of our children, our employees and the organization as a whole.

STAFFING AND SAFETY

All staff who work directly with the children, and are counted in the child/staff ratio for any period of time, are certified at level 1, 2 or 3 through Day Care Staff Qualifications.  This means that all these staff members have received training in Early Childhood Development.

In order to ensure the safety and well being of the children at the centre, all day care staff and personnel are required to provide evidence of a satisfactory criminal record check prior to their employment, and every two years thereafter.  All staff must also supply to the Director a satisfactory Child Welfare Information System check.

All staff are expected to have a current first Aid in Childcare Certificate, which includes Infant and Child CPR training.

Staff are directly supervised by the Director and evaluated annually.  The Director and staff member each do an evaluation and then meet to compare them.  Training needs are discussed at this time and goals for each individual are set.

Day Care Director Envolvement

The Director spends a portion of each day in the rooms working directly with the children, at least 1 ½ hours per day, sometimes 4 or 5 hours.  The Director also makes brief visits to the rooms throughout the day to play with children, talk with staff and keep an eye on programming, etc.

Childcare Workers

The Childcare Workers are responsible for planning and implementing a developmental program of activities age appropriate and geared toward meeting the needs of the children in their care.  The number of childcare workers varies with the number of children enrolled.  The role of the staff members in the rooms is to set up the room to include the basic learning centres in an appealing way.  They must plan and implement a learning program of experiences and activities designed to meet the needs of the children in their care.  They provide a balance of active and quiet times, indoor and outdoor, individual and group activities.  They interact with the children throughout the day, moving them from one activity to the next as non-intrusively as possible.  The help extend the children’s play and introduce new centre, etc. when they feel it is appropriate.  They also supervise and help work out differences, upsets and hurt feelings etc.  Staff greet children and parents on arrival at the centre, and at pick up time, chat with parents and pass on information about activities or happenings during the day.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE CAMROSE CHILDREN’S CENTRE'S  DAY CARE  PROGRAM

Goals for the Child

1.    To provide opportunities for children to interact with peers and adults in a setting
conducive to the development of social relationships.

2.    To provide opportunities for meaningful play that is based on the child’s individual needs,
interests, handicaps and abilities.  This will build important foundations for daily skills,
                     and positive growth and development.

3.    To provide a safe environment that will encourage exploring and experimenting.

4.    To provide opportunities for development of both fine and gross motor skills.

5.    To provide opportunities for creativity by supplying materials and ideas that will stimulate the
child to create.  It is also a time to recognize and grow with children’s ideas and skills.

Our Goals to Parents

1.    To provide opportunities to meet and work with other parents and staff who have, as their
common goal, the interests and needs of the pre-school child.

2.    To provide safe and loving care for their children while the parents pursue their own work or
       other interests.

3.    To work, in a supportive role, as closely as possible with the parents in all categories of day care
programming for the necessary well being of the child and family.

4.    To act as a resource for parents by sharing childcare knowledge and helping connect them with
appropriate community agencies as families may require.

PARENT PARTICIPATION

The Camrose Children’s Centre has an open door policy and we encourage parents to visit the centre anytime, and invite you to explore your child’s world when the opportunity arises.

Because most of our parents are working, we try to schedule some evening events so that these parents can be involved.  Some of our special activities include our Christmas Concert, Pumpkin Party, and workshops of interest to parents.

We invite parents to volunteer by working at the centre, serving on the Board of Directors or providing activities and equipment.

We also encourage all parents to become actively involved in Fundraising in any capacity.  A portion of our revenue is generated through fundraising, and by participating, parents are helping to keep day care fees at a reasonable level.
Newsletters are produced each month and available at the front counter.  Parents are encouraged to read the newsletters as they contain information regarding upcoming events, centre close dates, etc.  Newsletters will also be posted on the bulletin board monthly.  Signs are posted on the front door announcing upcoming events and centre closures.
